Understanding Text Neck
Have you heard of “Text Neck”? It is a condition that results from staring down or staying hunched over an activity for too long. This posture isn’t new; people have done this for centuries with books, drawings, sewing, and many other activities. The modern condition is referred to as “Text Neck” because of the saturation of mobile devices. Our cultural addiction to mobile devices have multiplied the amount of time we spend hunched over. Therefore, to put this into another context, let’s review the stress on your body.
The human head weighs on average about 10 pounds (4.5Kg) in the correct vertical position. This weight force multiplies as the head lowers, 30 degrees equals approximately 40 pounds (18Kg), 60 degrees is on average about 60 pounds (27Kg) of neck pressure. While traveling this condition increases its negative affects by the multiple hours spent in cramped and confined spaces. Your comfort and wellbeing, during and after your travel experience can affect you for days or weeks afterwards.

What can be done?
When you get a couple of minutes during your day, stop to stretch your neck and reset your brain. Tilt your head from left to right a few times. Look over your left shoulder, and then slowly turn your head to look over your right shoulder. Roll your shoulders and neck. Anything you can do to get those stiff muscles moving will pay off.
Hold your device higher
Holding your device higher and bending your neck less can dramatically reduce the strain on your cervical spine. Holding your device in this way can also improve your situational awareness.
Put it down
So while this is maybe easier said than done, it’s nonetheless important to put the phone down every once in a while. Maybe a text message gets missed, but the benefit to your health and wellness will be worth it in the long run.
